Toyota has sold more electrified vehicles than any other manufacturer, and has been doing it for close to thirty years. Four different drivetrains, and they are not interchangeable.
HEV
Hybrid
A petrol engine and an electric motor, working together. The battery charges itself as you drive and brake.
No plug
Best for: almost everyone. City traffic especially, where the motor does most of the work.
PHEV
Plug in hybrid
A larger battery you can charge from a socket, plus the same petrol engine for when the battery runs out.
Type 2 AC
Best for: a short commute on electricity, with no anxiety about the long trip at the weekend.
BEV
Battery electric
No engine at all. One or two electric motors, and a large battery charged from a socket or a fast charger.
DC fast, Type 2
Best for: predictable daily distances with somewhere reliable to charge overnight.
FCEV
Hydrogen fuel cell
Hydrogen combines with oxygen in a fuel cell to make electricity. The only emission is water.
Hydrogen
Best for: the long term, once refuelling infrastructure exists.
